St. Mary’s u17 soccer team played Ardscoil Rathangan last Friday, October 27th. A strong start with excellent defending from Cassie, Hannah and Ruby. Lucy Doheny and Katie power made excellent early breaks up the pitch, but they were blocked down by the Rathangan goalkeeper. There was a strong fight from Ciara Ryan who played well in mid field. A St Mary’s penalty at 21 mins taken by Katie power was executed brilliantly and put Mary’s ahead by 1. However, this lead was short lived as Rathangan made a break which led to a goal.
A near goal by Rathangan had no chance against goalie Kate Walsh. At half time Rathangan were ahead by 1 but that didn’t stop Katie power from scoring two goals within 1 minute, one of which was a free from 40 yards out. Mary’s battled on with Lucy’s goal giving them a 2 goal lead. Katie Power was unstoppable in the second half as she scored yet another great goal followed by a second goal from Lucy Doheny. Laoise and Caoimhe were also very strong carriers in the second half. Final score 6-2 to Mary’s. Well done girls on a tough win over an aggressive Rathangan side.
