Venue: St Mary’s college

Time and date: Thursday 16th of November

Report by: Saoirse Greene and Aoife Keane

On a cold, damp and dull afternoon our U17 soccer team took on Gael Colaiste Cill Dara’s senior team from just up the road. The St. Marys girls wasted no time in gaining their first score. An excellent run down the wing by Isabella Campion forced a corner. The ball was then swung in by Lucy Doheny resulting in a clearance and was smashed in the back of the net by Aoife Hand giving St Mary’s an early 1-0 lead.

In the 12th minute St Mary’s had an indirect free kick in the box, which was well blocked by the GCCD defence, who then broke down the field and scored a powerful goal to even up the game.In the 24th minute a superb 20-yard kick from Katie Power restored Mary’s lead. In the 26th minute Aoife Hand Capitalised on a mistake in the GCCD defence and scored an excellent goal.

Shortly after GCCD broke through and went 1 on 1 toward the goal but Kate Walsh took on the task as keeper and dove to stop a great scoring chance.Great defence by Sarah Howell unfortunately led to the injury of her knees and St Mary’s continued the rest of the game with no subs.

The second half began with another excellent save from our keeper to prevent GCCD from closing the gap on the scoreboard. A super clearance from our backs delivered up to our forwards, led to a brilliant passage of play in our forwards between Isabella and Lucy alongside a fantastic finish resulted in St. Mary’s fourth Goal of the match.

A strong attack by GCCD was promptly shut down by a strong Cassie Mallon in defence. The ball was yet again sent into the GCCD forwards but to no prevail as our outstanding keeper put her body on the line to stop the ball. This was followed by Cassies kickout which led to a hard fought for goal, finished by Lucy Doheny.GCCD made it 5-2 with a breakaway goal.Lucy drove up the field and hammered the ball into the goals to gain herself a hattrick. After some great tackles in the back line, Ciara Ryan retrieved the ball and rattled the net with the sixth goal for St. Mary’s.

The game finished with a well fought for Victory for St. Mary’s with a result of 6-2 to us. Well done girls.
