The match was played in difficult conditions in St Marys with a very heavy and wet pitch. Athlone scored their first goal within the first 4 minutes of the match and scoring the second goal in the 8th minute. A good strike in the 15th minute from distance by Lucy O Rourke was heading to the top corner but saved well by the Athlone keeper.. Athlone scored again on 14 minutes leaving St. Marys with a big challenge to get back into the game and but for some excellent defending from Anna Coburn the score could have been worse.
A corner taken by Athlone at 16 minutes resulted in an injury to goalkeeper Ciara Waldron who had to be replaced by Isabella Campion. An excellent pass from midfield by Lucy O’Rourke to Katie Power saw Katie run clear but unfortunately her shot was saved by the Athlone keeper. Athlone scored their fourth goal on 20 minutes.
In the 2nd half St Marys got on the ball more and started asking questions of the Athlone back line.
A Brilliant save by Isabella Campion kept the score down as Athlone looked dangerous on the counterattack. A great goal for St. Mary's at 58 minutes by Katie Power who was played through by Lucy O’Rourke to finish from the edge of the box with her right foot.Another good save by Isabella kept the score at 5-1. There was a further 2 goals scored by Athlone in the last few minutes as St. Marys pushed high up the field in an attempt to get back into the game.
The St. Marys team with a host of new players this year following on from winning this competition last year have represented the school very well and did fantastic to reach the Q-Final of a Leinster A competition. Best for St. Marys on the day were Laura Dunlea, Lucy O’Rourke and goal scorer Katie Power.
