Senior Camogie V Colaiste Iasogain

22-October-21

The Senior Camogie team had a superb win versus Colaiste Iasagáin. The game finished 8-9 to 3-12 in a thriller played at Naas GAA club.

Colaiste Iasagáin started the livelier with plenty of possessions in the opening fifteen minutes. St. Mary’s had the advantage on the scoreboard with two well taken goals by Sara Carroll. She finished the second goal with great finesse to the top corner. The midfield pairing of Emma Williams and Róise Hennessy battled hard and made some lung bursting runs from end line to end line. Allie Mc Grath showed great composure in the opening half to convert a difficult free to add to her two points from play. Iásagain were staying in sight and were closing the gap with a few well taken points and two goals.

The water break reinvigorated the Mary's girls as they went on to dominate the second quarter. Great passing and teamwork were allowing the forwards to flourish. Eimear Tuohy was winning and clearing balls at corner back she had no right to get. Eva Lynch was shoring up the defence very well while Aoife Mc Dermott launched many attacks from the half back line. Almha O’Rourke took an excellent goal. Third year Ciara Ryan was now growing in confidence as she rattled the Iasagáin net. Marys were five up at half time.

The second half continued in much the same fashion as the first. Mary’s forward prowess was too much for the opposition to contend with. Róise and Emma continued to give it their all for the jersey. St. Mary’s College were much more composed in their striking in the second half. Half backs Dervla Hanifan and Alanah Byrne got on a lot of ball. The industrious Leah Mc Govern got on the end of a couple of lovely scores while causing havoc with her blistering pace along the wing.

Allie Mc Grath was flourishing and made very good use of numerous possessions. The old saying of ‘goals win games’ was evident on this balmy October Wednesday afternoon in Naas. Ciara Ryan and Sara Carroll both completed a hattrick of goals each. Ciara’s natural skill and predatory instincts were a joy to behold. Captain Sara showed great leadership and constantly won ball for her team. Róise finished with a well-deserved goal towards the end, a reward for her trojan work out around midfield. Saoirse O’Gorman and Leyna Weinforth both worked hard and contributed well when coming on. Hannah Murphy and Clodagh Corry had superb games in goal respectively. Megan Riordan didn’t give an inch in the full back line.

Overall, it was a great first day out for St. Mary’s Senior Camogie team. Well done girls.
