Second Year Hockey

Date: Thursday 8th December 2023

Venue: Loreto

Reporter: Meabh Choiseul & Mary Moran

Today our second-year hockey team played Loreto, St Stephen’s Green. The match kicked off at 2pm on schedule. Minutes into the first half a St Mary’s free was awarded from a Loreto stick tackle which resulted in a run up the pitch with the ball by Lily Moran and Gabrielle Mather. A free was awarded to Aimee Fitzgerald in the twelfth minute due to a Loreto foot inside the St Mary's D, Aimee gave an amazing pass up to Kate who then passed up to Aoife Lawlor. Who unfortunately was tackled, and Loreto won the ball.

It was a close goal for Loreto but Hannah Browne, the brilliant goalie, made a superb save. The halftime whistle was blown at twenty five past two with Loreto up by three. The girls, after receiving an inspirational speech from Ms Garry went out more determined than ever.

Early into the second half Katelyn Thompson made an amazing tackle and though she fell she continued to fight back and won the ball which resulted in a fantastic pass from Ava Conroy up to Gabrielle Mather who ran up the pitch with the ball and had a shot on goal. In the seventeenth minute of the second half Alannah O’Sullivan won a great free which resulted in another break up the sideline. Unfortunately, St Mary’s free resulted in a Loreto short corner, another foot during this short corner resulted in another short which with a brilliant save from Hannah and a pass from Aimee out the wings to Kate gave another break to St Mary's out the wing. It was a tough match but the girls played brilliantly and didn’t stop till the last whistle was blown.
