Minor Soccer - Leinster A Cup

Presentation Kilkenny 3 St. Marys College 0

Wednesday 10th November 11am KO in Kilkenny

St Mary’s Minor soccer team played their first match today against a strong Presentation Kilkenny in the Leinster Minor A Cup. The St. Marys girls started off strong but despite great defending from Sophie Niland and Grace Walsh Presentation Kilkenny scored their first of three goals early in the game. In fact it was 3-0 to the home side by half time as the St. Marys girls got to grips with the surface and playing and gelling as a team.

There was great play throughout the game from St. Marys and in the second half in particular including a near goal by Erin Killian. Lucy Doheny was a constant threat going forward and was so unfortunate to hit the cross bar not once but twice after two brilliant shots from the edge of the Kilkenny box. With strong defending and goalkeeping in the St Marys defence they didn’t concede any goals in the second half and showed great improvement as the game wore on. Despite the scoreline the girls put in a fantastic team performance and could have easily got something from the game in the second half.

This was the first competitive soccer match for the entire squad in the colours of St. Marys and to go toe to toe with arguably one of the top soccer schools in Leinster if not the country and compete the way the team did shows that soccer in St. Marys is in safe hands for the future. Hard luck to all players and coach Mr O’Malley and best of luck in the league.
