St Mary's College

Junior Hockey v Newbridge College

Our Junior B hockey team took on Newbridge College on Thursday 16th of December. There was great excitement for both teams and coaches as it was our first time to welcome Newbridge to St. Mary’s since March 2020.

This was a very close game with both teams playing very well in the first half. Some great play in midfield by Sophie Hennessy, Katie Gammell and Hannah McElliott led to some goal chances for our forwards. Our forwards played very well and were unlucky not to score a number of times. We eventually found the back of the net through Kate Williamson just before half time.

In the second half Newbridge came out on a mission and put our St. Mary’s defense under a lot of pressure. Pia Costello between the posts made some great saves and Jess Burke, Caoimhe Gannon, Anna Scott and Emma O’Donnell had to play very well to keep Newbridge out. Unfortunately for us Newbridge broke though twice in quick succession to gain the lead 2-1.

The St. Mary’s girls didn’t give up with some great defensive work from Amy Gannon, Michelle Buggy and our forwards tried to find the equalizer. Zoe Orbinski, Lucy Coy, Erin Revins and Habibat Ajayi worked tirelessly to find the goal but to no avail.

Well done to all the girls who played. With each game it is clear our skills are developing. We look forward to some more games in the New Year.

Minor Hockey v Newbridge College

Our Minor B hockey team took to the field for the first time this year to welcome Newbridge College. It was the first time this team played together as it is a combination of 1st and 2nd years. It was also the first time for many to play 11 aside hockey. This was not clear as after a new nervous minutes at the start of the game when both teams were finding their feet the St. Mary’s Girls began to play like a team who had been together for years.

Neasa McPhilips played very well in center mid. She worked tirelessly covering ground all over the pitch and it is no doubt that her hard work and that of fellow midfielder Sarah Harrington led to the 2 goals from Caoimhe Ni Mheachair.

Emiear Prout led the troops in defence and was instrumental in St. Mary’s clean sheet. She was assisted with good performances from Andrea Cotovici, Fiona Shain, Saorlait Ferguson and Sadhbh O’ Neill.

Great work in the second half from Laura Funken, Saoirse Maher, Zoe Lillis, Amy Wang and Amy Dowling were key in Ella Guing finding the net to give St. Mary’s a 3-0 win.

Well done girls. It was a great performance and we look forward to more games in the New Year.
