Geography Awareness Week

A very successful Geography Awareness week was held in St. Mary’s College Naas. All pupils were actively involved in the organised activities. Transition years designed and displayed posters that showed the variety and beauty of our earth under the heading Landscapes of the World. Other classes researched and displayed many interesting and unusual facts about our earth. These posters were dotted around all corridors of the school. A competition was held each day and the daily winners were presented with vouchers.

A DVD on various geographical issues was screened each lunch time in the Demonstration room. Pupils could eat their lunch while watching erupting volcanoes, marvelling at the strange life forms in the Galapagos Islands or examining the consequences of Global warming and melting ice sheets. Geography models depicting aspects of the First Year Geography course were on display in the entrance hall. Visitors were greeted by waterfalls, underground limestone caves and volcanoes to name but a few.

The highlight of the week was the visit of Professor  John Sweeney from NUIM Maynooth.  Professor Sweeney gave an inspiring talk to 4th years on the value  of water now and in the future. All enjoyed the presentation and had their eyes opened to the importance of a resource that we here in Ireland take for granted. After the lecture Professor Sweeney (a former lecturer to 5 of the geography teachers in St. Mary’s) was presented with a picture from the Geography department to mark his recent retirement and to thank him for his support and encouragement to all geography students of St. Mary’s both past and present.
