Student Council 2015-2016

student council 2015-2016

On the 14 of January 2016, our student council was invited to attend the Cycle Against Suicide Student Congress in the RDS. We set off in the morning in high spirits with a group of Transition Years all looking forward to being part of the huge movement promoting mental health awareness.
We arrived and were greeted with open arms by stewards who showed us to our seats. There was a wide range of schools from around the country who had put together heart-warming and heart-breaking videos showing us how we can help to keep ourselves feeling good and to understand that it’s ok not to feel ok.
There were celebrities such as Jim Breen, who founded the organisation, Maria Walsh, Colm Hayes and Niamh Briggs at the event discussing how mental health effected their own lives and their close family members.
Joanne O’Riordan who was born without any limbs, told us how she copes with her disability, how she had a documentary film made about her and also about when she spoke before UN in New York when she was
only a teenager. There were many other people talking at the event and we were all individually touched by each story.
There were wonderful performances by The Heathers and Walking On Cars which got everyone up dancing and singing.
We were honoured to be invited to such a powerful and moving event. We had an amazing day.

Remember, ‘It’s ok not to feel ok and it’s ok to ask for help’.

Student Council are now up and running for this school year of 2015/16. The twenty girls joined together for the first time on September 23rd for a training day. This was followed up by a bonding lunch at Lawlors, Naas.
Our first official meeting was held on last Thursday, 8th October. We made a great kick start at the organisation of a number of fun events this year for the school such as rag days!
To promote positivity , our first act is making a ''Quote Box'' which will be found outside of reception. We hope students will take that opportunity to enter a quote into the box as one will be read at the start of Monday morning announcements- to get everybody off to a good start for that coming week.
Everyone of the girls on the Council are fully committed to doing their very best to make the school a better place for everybody- both teachers and students.
Keep an eye, also,  on the Student Council notice board next to Room 19 for consistent updates of the Student Council's Activity.
Wishing you all a healthy and happy year!''
