First Year and Senior B Hockey
1st Year hockey
The first-year hockey teams played two matches on Wednesday 5th February welcoming St. Raphaela’s Secondary school. Our girls made it two wins from 2 beating the visitors 5-0 and 2-0. The girls are improving with each game, developing their hockey skills, game play and team work.

At present the girls have played three game, each team now has two wins and one loss. This puts the St. Mary's Girls in a very good position going into their last two group games that will be played after midterm. On Friday the 28th we will travel to our neighbours in Newbridge College and on Wednesday 4th March we will face Mount Sackville away.

Senior B

On Wednesday 18th February our Senior B team traveled to Loreto Beaufort for a play off to progress to the knockout stages of the Leinster league. The St. Mary's Girls led by Sarah McCafferty off the pitch and Aoife Lawlor on the pitch were very excited about the game. In the group stages our girls came from 2-0 down at half time to draw 2-2 thus we knew if we played well with a high work rate and good intensity we had a very good chance of beating the Loreto girls this time around.

It was clear from the very start that both teams were up for the match and the prize of a place in the last 16 was going to go to the team that worked the hardest and took their chances. The St. Mary's girls opened the scoring with a superb solo effort from Centre-Back Aine Dignam. Aine played very well in her new position at centre back.

The second goal came shortly after and was a great team effort. Eva Cunningham found Aida McNamee from a sideline ball and Aida did what you want from a centre forward turned into space and found her fellow striker Sarah Rowland. Sarah continued with some excellent but simple play. Sarah beat her player and then quickly passed the ball onto our third striker Ciara Finn who found her self in space and in a one on one with the keeper. Ciara made it look very easy as she slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Beaufort did not give up and tried to get themselves back into the game. In the second half Beaufort applied a lot of pressure and St. Mary's found themselves defending their lead with all their will and strength. The Beaufort girls found the net with five minutes to go. However the St. Mary's players were not giving up their lead and fought it out until the final whistle. The game ended 2-1. We will now face Wesley College away in the last 16 of the Senior 4 Leinster League.

It would be very difficult to pick a player of the match as each of the 14 players played very well and were instrumental in the win.
